The list at a glance

Polymarket publishes the list of Perps markets, called instruments, as a public data feed. Its documentation says that integrators should read live instrument details before submitting orders, so the list is the place to read current limits. On the day this post was checked it had 89 entries in four categories:

CategoryMarketsMaximum leverage
Crypto413x to 50x
Equity3810x
Index610x to 50x
Commodity420x

Two things stand out. Stocks are the second largest group and all of them have the same maximum, 10x. Crypto has the widest range, from 3x for some tokens up to 50x for BTC (bitcoin) and ETH (ether).

One detail about names. The list gives two index markets a display name that differs from the symbol: SP500-USD is shown as USA500-USD and NAS100-USD as US100-USD. Polymarket's documentation says to use the display symbol as the label when there is one and fall back to the symbol, so this post uses the display names.

How maximum leverage is spread

Grouped by maximum leverage, the list looks like this:

Maximum leverageMarkets
50x4
20x8
10x63
5x9
3x5

The top of the range is narrow. The markets at 50x are USA500-USD, US100-USD, BTC-USD and ETH-USD: two crypto markets and two index markets. One step lower, the markets with a maximum of 20x are BRENTOIL-USD, EWY-USD, GOLD-USD, HYPE-USD, SILVER-USD, SOL-USD, WTIOIL-USD and XRP-USD, which is every commodity in the list, three crypto markets and one index market. Everything else, including every stock, sits at 10x or below.

This is worth saying because a line on Polymarket's own Perps FAQ still gave a lower top figure on the same day: up to 20x for crypto, SP500, oil, gold and silver. When Polymarket's pages disagree, this post goes by the live list, which is the page Polymarket points developers to.

Leverage falls as a position grows

A maximum leverage is only the starting point. Most markets have tiers, and the more position value you hold, the lower the leverage allowed for the whole position. A few markets have just one tier, so their cap never falls: CBRS-USD, EWY-USD, MRVL-USD, NCLD-USD, PRL-USD, SOXL-USD and UNITREE-USD. These are the tiers of two of the 50x markets in the list, BTC-USD and USA500-USD:

Reading the two tables side by side shows that the ladders are not the same. The BTC-USD ladder starts cutting leverage at a smaller position size than USA500-USD does, and it reaches its lowest step at a much smaller size. The rule that goes with the ladder is that your leverage setting applies to the entire position, not bracket by bracket, which the margin and leverage guide explains with an example.

What every market has in common

Some limits do not vary across the list. Every market in the snapshot uses a funding interval of 1 hour, so a position pays or receives funding at the end of each hour (the funding guide shows how the rate is built). The liquidation fee rate is 0.5% for every market, paid on top of the normal maker or taker rate while an account is being liquidated. And the smallest order value is 10 pUSD.

Trading fees are not set per market either: Polymarket's trading documentation says the single perpetual fee schedule applies to every perpetual market. The fees follow your trading volume, in tiers that start at 0.0400% for takers and 0.0125% for makers. The Perps guide shows the tiers and the volume window that Polymarket's pages name.

What a snapshot cannot tell you

A list like this changes when Polymarket adds a market, removes one or changes a limit. The numbers above were read on the day shown. Two limits that matter for risk are not in this post at all: the maintenance margin rate, which depends on a market's maximum leverage, and your own liquidation price, which depends on your entry, fees and funding. Try those in the liquidation calculator.
